Meet Karen, a fellow blogger who is balancing midlife and all the obstacles with grace and excitement!
Let’s be honest about venturing out of the “safety net” of a corporate setting and into one where you are the CEO, employee, marketing team, IT specialist and everything else necessary to running a business. Clearly and unequivocally, you will face obstacles. If you want to make the 9-5 escape permanent, diving into overcoming obstacles, although I know you’ve done it before, is vital.
I met blogger (and fellow GenXer!) Karen in my new Free At 50 life- in a blogging community online! Karen is the designer of the lifestyle blog, Balancing Midlife which focuses on self-care and positivity for women approaching midlife, in midlife, and beyond.
Through her blog, Karen hopes to inspire women to prioritize themselves, improve their self-confidence, and have some fun along the way. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her grandchildren and volunteering at a local horse rescue. (Oh horses! They’re one of my passions here in Colonial Williamsburg and clearly a connection Karen and I have beyond blogging.)
Through her article below, she inspires ALL GenXers, as we move into a new chapter of life full of new obstacles to overcome. Grab your coffee, tea, or beverage of choice and have a read!

Life is full of obstacles and challenges, that is for sure.
But, instead of viewing them as roadblocks to success, we should embrace them as opportunities to grow and learn.
In this blog post, I will be discussing why overcoming obstacles is important, and how to turn challenges into meaningful successes.
Let's get to it!

The Importance of Overcoming Obstacles
Overcoming obstacles is an essential part of life. It teaches us valuable lessons, builds character, and can help us reach our highest potential. It’s not something to be feared or avoided; rather it should be embraced as a necessary part of personal growth and development.
Here are 5 key reasons why overcoming obstacles is so important:
1) Develop Resilience – Learning how to overcome challenges can teach us resilience. Overcoming an obstacle often requires grit, determination, hard work, persistence, and resilience. These values will serve you well throughout your life when facing further challenges.
2) Strengthens Self-Confidence - As we overcome obstacles, we become more confident in our own abilities. Additionally, overcoming a challenge reinforces our belief that ‘we can do anything if we put our mind to it’. This can be incredibly empowering for both your day-to-day activities as well as future goals you set.
3) Builds Problem-Solving Skills - When faced with problems or difficulties it's important to have the right skill set to deal with them effectively. This includes problem-solving strategies such as brainstorming possible solutions or working out what resources would be needed to tackle the issue at hand.
4) Gains New Perspective - When confronting an obstacle there may be multiple paths available for achieving a desired outcome. Discovering new ways through experimentation will give you insight into different approaches which have their own unique pros and cons.
5) Reaps Personal Satisfaction – Finally, perhaps one of the greatest aspects of overcoming obstacles is experiencing achievement after pushing ourselves out of our comfort zone. There's nothing quite like completing something knowing all effort invested has paid off. This sense of personal satisfaction provides motivation for tackling whatever future hurdles arise.

What does overcoming obstacles teach you?
Rather than seeing our obstacles as setbacks, we should view them as learning opportunities, a chance to gain a better understanding of ourselves and the world around us.
With each challenge we tackle, we can discover valuable insights about who we are and what we're capable of achieving without having to leave our comfort zone. Instead of shying away from difficult tasks, embrace them for what they are: chances for personal growth and development.

How does overcoming obstacles build character?
The purpose of obstacles in life is to challenge us, grow our resilience, and build our character. Though it can be difficult to understand why we experience certain obstacles at times, they have the potential to help us become stronger mentally, emotionally, and physically.
When we are faced with an obstacle, it is important to remember that every setback has a lesson attached to it. We should use this as an opportunity to reflect on what went wrong and identify how we can approach the situation differently in the future.
In addition, by learning from our mistakes or challenges in life, we become more open-minded and accepting of others who face similar struggles.
Moreover, obstacles teach us about ourselves – what are our strengths? What areas do we need improvement? How can we better prepare for setbacks? The answers lie in how well you address each challenge you face.
Going through challenging situations helps remind us that no matter what happens, with dedication and perseverance anything is possible!
You may face difficulties or fail several times without giving up throughout these scenarios, but ultimately such patience allows so much growth that one wouldn’t have achieved otherwise.

Benefits of Overcoming Obstacles
One benefit of overcoming obstacles is gaining perspective. While difficult times may seem insurmountable when facing them head-on, taking a step back to view them from afar can provide invaluable insights into what went wrong and what could be done differently next time.
Viewing challenges this way can also help you see how far you have come and allow for moments of feeling accomplished.
In addition, overcoming obstacles allows us to discover our own strengths which is something everyone needs to do in order to lead a fulfilling life. It’s easy to get caught up in everyday tasks without stopping to appreciate how far we have come or how much we have accomplished over the years.
But when faced with an obstacle (big or small) we are given an opportunity to rely on our own inner strength while striving toward success. This connection with our own power is something that cannot be replicated by any other means!

How can obstacles be a positive thing?
Obstacles can be a positive thing because they provide us with opportunities to learn something new and grow. When faced with an obstacle, we often have to take a step back and assess the situation in order to find a solution. This gives us the chance to create unique strategies that could benefit our lives in the long run.
Obstacles are also great motivators for progress and change.
Throughout history, people have used difficult challenges as fuel for creativity; some of humanity’s greatest achievements are rooted in individuals’ determination to overcome obstacles standing between them and their goals.
In essence, facing obstacles is about having faith in yourself during times when things seem impossible. It pushes us outside our comfort zones so we can become better versions of ourselves.
With enough determination and belief that anything is possible despite challenging paths, obstacles can prove advantageous rather than hindering our growth overall.
